In October 2018 we travelled to The Pilliga, on Gamilaraay country, to explore, listen, learn and record in a period of intense drought.
We were first inspired to travel to the Pilliga following a trip Adam and Jim made to the area... they were stunned by its rich avian sonoverse and shocked by the proximity of gas fields.
In heading out there as a large group, our intention was to explore acoustically diverse environments at various times of day, and hopefully feature the sounds of the amazing birdlife, which is under continuous threat from the mining/fracking projects in the area.
21 or so Splinters spent 5 days and nights on the edge of the Pilliga Nature Reserve. We spent the most time playing in and around our base at Eagle Valley; in gullies, over creek beds, in vast fields and splayed across rocky walls. We took a tour of the Sandstone Caves with Gamilaraay artist and ranger Brett Ashby who gave us permission to play there as the sun set. At the Dandry Gorge we employed our choreographed methods to play and make recordings on multiple machines over a large area, navigating our way down stream along the dried up river bed.

Fabric Cordial is Bud Petal’s third album. The making of it was a two year adventure. Written in small German towns, cities of the Levant, and the inner west of Sydney, it sees Bud Petal create a unique blend of sounds and stories that range from Hamburg love songs, to parental longings for the Kibbutz, to the joy of returning home to Sydney.
Bud Petal's music has been described as "cerebral art-folk", "the music Lord Byron would be making had he lived in the 21st century and taught himself how to play the guitar", "what you get if you mix love, politics, and surrealism", and "the feeling one gets when drowning within a sea of smiles".

Relaxing with Prophets
Short extracts from Sound Circus August 24- September 17. Sound Circus was modeled on the idea of a traveling circus, taking new, experimental, and vernacular music to White Cliffs and the extreme western areas of NSW, plus one off visits to Queensland, & South Australia - the area known as "Corner Country" Selections from White Cliffs, Broken Hill, Packsaddle,The Dog Fence, Tibooburra, Cameron Corner - and it was really really windy most of the time!
'I Monti', the title track from Chaika's new album. Piece composed by Laura Bishop, set to Italian poetry by Edoardo di Giovanni. See www.chaikaband.com for tour dates.
Pioneered in the 1950s by musicians breaking the rules of jazz and composition, free improvisation is still as difficult - and potentially transcendent - as it ever was.
Prophets workshop for Artplay, as part of the 2014 Melbourne International Jazz Festival. Workshop consisted of mask-making, instrument-building, collective improvisation and spontaneous composition. Thanks to everyone involved! The kids, the parents, Artplay, City of Melbourne, The Melbourne International Jazz Festival and the rainy weather!
